Sara got up for her 8am shift and I somehow woke right up after a long wedding day shoot and hour drive home last night. I fell asleep sitting on the couch while backing up my photos and recharging everything for today's out of town shoot in Indy. I'm thinking donuts sound good and I should probably kick a pot of coffee into drip while it's on my mind. Nah.

Fall is near. A best friend moved to Germany and already visited Prague. For you non-geography buffs (or me who is kinda lost with Euro-geography) Prague is in another country. So he's been to two countries in 2 days. Weasel. That travel bug bit him good while living on the west coast. Can't say I blame the guy.

I went to leave Jon a comment on his Pragueventure and realized it's been all of 7 years since I was in Europe. I've been having travel nostalgia flashbacks this week. I left my iPod hidden away somewhere after the last Underground Cafe show and needed music so I got out my battered CD walkman I scuffed up throughout Scandinavia and Asia. Works like a charm. (What exactly do charms do anyway? How do you know when they're working? Don't they just... dangle from QVC / Home Shopping Network bracelets? How's that called "work"?)

I've been recounting my Sweden trip often recently. Whenever people act surprised that a person could uproot and move out of the country in "such short notice" I have to laugh. Almost all my international trips after graduation (high school, mind you) were arranged in spontaneity. It's nothing foreign to to me to have little notice before leaving. It's part of the excitement, and it helps to keep the reality of exactly what you're doing delayed from setting in right away. In a good way. You'd probably freak out if you thought it all through at once.

I think I've been reliving or at least remembering my great travel memories through Jon's own recent incredible "short-notice, awesome opportunity, always wanted to do this" kind of travel. I couldn't be happier for the guy, but I have to say being in the middle of it all again has really stirred up my own travel bugs.

Before I get too wistful for Scandinavia in the fall.... mmmm... Sweden... crisp air and coffee.... chocolate... soup... dang I did it anyway. Before I get too distracted with travel nostalgia, I'm gonna start that coffee and make a respectable breakfast for this big day ahead.

Moral of the story - if you can get out and travel, GO.
You won't regret the experience.
You will, however, itch to do it again soon.

our first ultrasound! it's a...

It's a... baby. The day before a gust-nado (strong gusts but not quite a tornado) that swept through campus and knocked over trees, branches, and a spire off the top of the Basilica. Or maybe the college graduate about to enter real life and a career? Maybe it's your last big to-do before your wedding? I'm checking (D) - none of the above.

Make that "the road trip of a 20-something newlywed self-employed college student's stateside travel opportunity." A drive west through the plains, hills, and mountains of the great
(north) American landscape in a quest for travel miles and a hoorah
before the busy season kicks in all around me.It's been 6 months since my last long drive to Tennessee with my wife for our honeymoon. It's been 4 years since my last trip farther than big city Chicago or lakeside Michigan destinations that involved a flight home.

Planes, trains, and automobiles will be boarded in no sequential order. Midweek I'll meet up with fellow camera store escapee / photo nerd / MacGuyver fan / storywriter / traveler Jon in the Windy City to hit the road and drive his truck west to his new business locale in Oregon. Pretty sweet deal that his company is moving him there to photograph a bunch of locations along the left coast this spring. Rather bittersweet is the move westward from the hometown friends and a sweetheart in Wisconsin, the Dairy-Air State.

So then, adventures as they are, I haven't jumped into a flight path or a train route in the States since I visited some friends in North Carolina back in '03 and before that I was on the road / rails / air in Southeast Asia, my second home for my late teens and early 20s. I've only flown to Phoenix, Arizona for a convention downtown and never got out to see sights out west. Driving I'll see the landscape better, catch up over a week's time as we head nearby some of the famous National parks out that way and settle in to Portland and see the sights a day or so before... the flight back. (I'm up to drive it one way, but I got a wife waiting to see me too you know!)

Excited, tired, and not yet packed - these are the ingredients to an unforgettable trip if ever I remember one.

eB

Attention CCS / LeSEA friends - Kevin Ferguson Funeral Info

This is for all my CCS / LeSEA friends and church family far & wide. If news didn't reach you already, Kevin Ferguson passed away last week. The viewing is later today, Sunday, January 14 from 2-6pm at Palmer Funeral home on Michigan & Chippewa across from Calvary Temple Church and the funeral is Monday at 11am at Trinity Evangelical Free Church on Miami Road.

I got a text message last Wednesday to tell me the news from one of the guys that goes to the youth group where Kevin's oldest son John is a pastor in the youth department. From what I've heard from my family and friends, no one had heard from Kevin in a few days and John had the police break in to his home to check on him. They found him in a chair with a Bible in front of him and he had already passed away. They suspect health problems with his heart or diabetes but nothing has been said officially aside from "natural causes." I don't know any more than this so please don't ask me, but do send up a prayer for John, Mikey, Sarah and their mom Irma and family.

I've known these guys since they moved to South Bend and I went to school with John since 3rd grade... roughly 18 years. If you've been around CCS for any length of time you've run into these guys at any given function, outreach, missions trip, or cafe concert night. Though I haven't worked with John in a youth meeting like we did for years since the church split and he was let go, I was glad I had the last saturday of September off to attend his wedding, and he and his fiance (now wife!) attend mine. Mikey has been in my middle sister Aliya's class from k5 though graduation and Sarah has been a friend of my youngest sister Genna since... they could talk. Irma was mom to youth group kids, her tough love earning her the affectionate nickname, Irmanator.

Please join me in supporting them any way you can through this loss. Your prayers are coveted for them, and if you can make it I know how much it means to have the support of friends through a death in the family. eB
prayer request for our neice Carly

As I'm in the midst of editing photos, I'm asking all the believer types out there to send out a prayer for our neice Dawn's newborn baby Carly.
